Description

There are tons of videos on the internet in regards to learning the piano. This is great, it gives you insight into how a piano works and how to get going.

But over my years of producing beats, I’ve realized we as beatmakers play the piano differently than someone trying to learn classical piano.

So why do we have to learn the piano from a classical standpoint when we’re wanting to create awesome beats – whether that be beautiful piano beats, or just have a better understanding of chords and improvisation?

Cause here’s the thing:

As a beatmaker, we create repetition.

We create loops which are on repeat over and over, and our goal is for these loops to be extremely catchy. (Also keeping in mind for our other instruments in terms of mixing for clarity.)

So in this course, I cover with you:

  • The basics of a piano to get everyone on the same page
  • How keys, scales, and chords work
  • Figuring out powerful chord progressions (and sharing some of my own personal favorites!)
  • Thinking in terms of melodies and improvisation
  • How to bounce around with your right hand
  • Left-hand techniques to add fullness to your composition
  • Playing with both hands
  • Popular note placement, counting beats, and different rhythms in the industry.
  • How to stay motivated to practice piano as a beatmaker

I have been practicing piano almost every day for the past 5 years, and these are the things that I have discovered and want to share with you within this course.

By the end of the course, you will have an in-depth understanding of chords/scales, and be able to improvise on the piano.

From here on out, it’s up to you to practice with this knowledge to take your productions to the next level!

Hope this course is the tipping point in your productions! 🙂

Course Curriculum

This course is divided into two main sections:

– The theory side of the piano
– The practical side (playing/improvising on the piano)

The Theory Side:

I first introduce you to what you’re actually looking at when you look at a piano and a basic overview of how it works.

Things such as octaves, the notes, keys + scales, and showing how chords work with major and minor.

I stress the importance of understanding the keys + scales videos as this is fundamental to knowing how to improvise on a piano.

Further, we get into counting beats in terms of music production, and showing the power of arpeggios and inversions from a beatmaking stand-point!

(We touch a little bit on more advanced chords, and how you can implement those into your tracks.)

The Practical Side:

After understanding how a piano and scales work, we can now jump into learning how to play the piano.

This is no marry had a little lamb type of piano lol – I’m starting you off with some chords and counting beats.

After introducing you to a couple chords, I bring in improvising with the right hand.

This right-hand video alone should be the eye-opener you’re wanting out of your piano skills.

In the next video, the left hand is introduced!

The left hand has always been tricky for me to fully implement, but over hours and years of practice, I share many tricks and techniques I use to get my left hand blending well with my right hand.

Finally, to solidify the right and left hands, as well as giving you a real-world example of all the music theory we’ve covered so far, I teach you how to play one of my songs, Giving in is Giving Up!

I break the song down step by step – you learn about how I used arpeggios, picked a scale, and implemented the music theory I’ve taught you so far to create my own original composition.

After you have had your eyes opened to improvisation, we get into timing and chord placement.

I show you this by playing different loops in the piano roll of FL Studio.

And to top off this section, I show you personally how I’d go about picking a scale and chords to start making a beat.

By the end of this course, you should be able to improvise on a piano at a beginner level.

From then on, it’s up you to practice 🙂
